From Slippery Tiles to Safe Floors: A Hygienic Upgrade in Zaandam

Products Used: Stonclad® UR • Stonkote® HT4 • Stonset®TG6  • Stonproof® RH7
Application Area: Production area

A Dutch food production company urgently required a new hygienic flooring solution to replace the hazardous tiles in its production area in Zaandam.

Problem

The existing tiles in the production area had become dirty, posing significant challenges in maintaining cleanliness. Oil residues from production operations accumulated on the tiles surface, reducing slip resistance and posing significant safety concerns for the company’s employees. Additionally, the grout between the tiles had deteriorated, leading to serious hygiene concerns. These gaps allowed oils to seep into the substrate, increasing the risk of food contamination and structural deterioration. The client stressed that their chosen flooring solution must meet the criteria of exceptional long-lasting performance, incorporating enhanced anti-slip properties and durability to withstand heavy vehicle loads, such as forklifts. Furthermore, they required a specialist flooring provider capable of completing the installation swiftly to minimise production downtime.

Solution

The project began with the removal of all damaged or loose tiles which were replaced with Stonset TG6 to provide a sound substrate. Stonproof RH7 was then applied to provide crack-bridging and ensure long term performance of the substrate when regularly exposed to thermal shock. Then, more than 4,600  of Stonclad UR and Stonkote HT4 with an optional, textured finish was installed. This solution provides a high-performance mortar system with a seamless, slip-resistant, and hygienic surface designed to endure rigorous cleaning routines and deliver exceptional long-term durability.
To enhance hygiene, the project included the installation of Stonclad UR integral cove base. This feature created a seamless transition between the floor and walls, eliminating problematic corners and crevices that could naturally create dirt and bacteria, delivering superior hygiene throughout the facility.

Conclusion

This tailored solution not only resolved the client’s immediate safety and hygiene concerns but also delivered a durable, long-lasting flooring system designed to meet the rigorous demands of food production environments. The project was completed efficiently and professionally, leveraging Stonhard’s unique competitive advantage as both manufacturer and installer — a service the client highly valued and appreciated.
