Stonhard España Delivers Advanced Chemical Resistant Lining Solutions for Global Agribusiness

Products Used: Stonset TG6Stonchem 678
Application Area: Secondary Containment Area

Stonhard España has successfully installed a corrosive resistant lining solution for a leading agribusiness company, at their facility in Cartagena. The project addressed significant challenges caused by aggressive chemical attacks on the facility's existing secondary containment area, which had been deteriorating rapidly for over two years.

Problem

The facility had been struggling with extensive substrate damage caused by prolonged exposure to harsh chemicals, including concentrated sulphuric and phosphoric acid. The existing tiled substrate failed due to chemical ingress through the tile joints, allowing acid to penetrate and damage the underlying concrete. As a result, this degradation created a hazardous environment, compromising the safety of day-to-day operations at the facility.

Solution

The client required an expert with a proven track record to provide a technical solution, including the removal of failed tiles, decontamination of the area, concrete repairs to the damaged substrate and the installation of a chemical-resistant, reinforced lining system. Stonhard España’s technical team executed the project, starting with the removal and replacement of up to 15 cm of the damaged floor substrate. To ensure safety, Stonhard’s construction team followed strict health and safety protocols, using specialised PPE to protect themselves from the harsh chemicals present on-site.

The team installed falls, to drain spills to the sump, using Stonhard’s Stonset TG6 system. Perimeter cove bases and pedestal bases were also reconstructed to improve structural integrity. Finally, Stonchem 600 Series resin which has excellent resistance to inorganic acids was utilised to install a resin lining system to the floors, walls and sumps of the secondary containment area. The entire space was protected with Stonchem 678, a fibre-glass reinforced resin solution, specifically engineered to resist chemical attack, to bridge cracks and provide a seamless lining, durable enough to retain its integrity in the direct sunlight and withstand the thermal cycling challenges of the local climate.

Stonchem 678 is part of the family of Stonchem lining systems for engineers and maintenance teams seeking high-performance solutions. Unlike the previously installed tiles, Stonchem 678 provides a seamless barrier, preventing acid penetration that could damage the concrete.
