Uneven, Failing Floors Disrupt Manufacturing Efficiency

Avance Cabinetry, a kitchen and bath cabinetry manufacturer, faced significant challenges with the concrete floors throughout its Massachusetts manufacturing facility. Years of heavy use had left the surface uneven and deteriorated, creating obstacles for carts and forklifts, which impacted daily efficiency. Adding to the concerns, the existing concrete contained a metal shake hardener (a dry shake powder applied to fresh concrete) which had caused severe bonding failures with previous flooring systems.

Avance Cabinetry was unable to shut down for more than a four day period per installation phase. This was an exceptionally tight schedule that Stonhard committed to achieving, setting them apart from flooring contractors the manufacturer had worked with before. The total project scope covered 29,400 sq. ft. with future flooring installations anticipated.

Seamless Epoxy System Overcomes Bonding Challenges and Heavy Manufacturing Demands

Stonhard first addressed bonding issues by mechanically preparing the concrete and sealing it with an epoxy-based primer to encapsulate the metal shake and ensure a strong, long-lasting bond. Stonclad GS, a seamless epoxy flooring system, was installed throughout the facility for its durability, impact resistance, and ability to withstand heavy manufacturing traffic. Stonkote GS4 epoxy coating completed the installation, increasing the floor’s abrasion and chemical resistance as well as its cleanability.

All three phases of the project required crews to navigate around massive, immovable manufacturing equipment, demanding extensive hand-applied installation to keep production schedules on track. Teal blue walkways with yellow demarcation lines were added to enhance visibility, clearly defining pedestrian paths and improving safety throughout the shop floor. Stonhard met Avance Cabinetry’s time-sensitive deadlines, delivering a durable floor with swift, expert installation, exceeding the manufacturing company’s expectations across the board.
