Worn-Out, Cracked Floors Make Maintenance a Challenge for Children’s Museum

The Bucks County Children’s Museum in New Hope, Pennsylvania, offers interactive, educational experiences for young children. After 13 years of heavy foot traffic, the museum decided it was time to replace its worn-out floors. The painted and stained concrete surfaces had suffered extensive cracking, including dynamic cracks, and water damage that left the 2,000 sq. ft. space unsightly and difficult to maintain. With the help of a state improvement grant, the museum turned to Stonhard for a durable and visually-appealing solution.

The custom blue Reflect floor enhances the museum’s playful atmosphere, inspired by the “Airways to Waterways” exhibit.

Reflect provides a seamless, easy-to-maintain surface that withstands heavy foot traffic.

A slip-resistant finish keeps young visitors safe while complementing the museum’s interactive exhibits.

Stonhard Transforms Museum with Durable, Artistic Flooring Solution

Museum staff desired a floor that would resolve cracking and water issues while enhancing the creative atmosphere of their exhibits and activity area. After reviewing numerous sample boards with Stonhard, they chose Reflect, an artistic poured floor by Stonhard’s luxury brand Liquid Elements. The custom blue color along with its fluid design was inspired by the museum’s on-site “Airways to Waterways” attraction and sets a soothing tone inviting children to connect with their environment through play.

Stonhard installers began by removing glue and paint from the existing substrate and implementing necessary remediation steps to ensure long-term durability. Cracks were addressed with Stonproof CT5 epoxy membrane to prevent movement, and the floor was leveled with Stonclad GS epoxy mortar system. The Reflect floor was then installed using a specialized technique with denatured alcohol to create a flowing, hammered effect. Two applications of Stonseal CF7 polyurethane coating offered a matte finish, slip resistance, and an easy-to-clean surface.

Reflect provides an ergonomic surface for young adventurers at Bucks County Children's Museum.

Reflect offers a sleek, seamless surface that’s as stunning as it is strong and comfortable.

The fluid, hammered effect of Reflect adds artistic depth while ensuring long-term performance.

“We’ve dealt with a lot of contractors over 13 years and Stonhard really stands out because they are just so dedicated to professionalism and craftsmanship,” said Kelly Krumenacker, Executive Director. “The kids were wowed! They thought it looked like water.”
