Established in 1965, John A. Burns School of Medicine (JABSOM) at University of Hawai’i is one of the leading medical education institutions in the United States. This diverse and award-winning medical school, located on the island of O’ahu, trains top physicians, biomedical scientists, and allied health workers. To ensure its campus facilities were reflecting its top-notch reputation, JABSOM turned to Stonhard to solve its cafeteria flooring issues. Years of damage from chairs and tables had taken a toll, causing once pristine floors to look worn out and unappealing.
JABSOM’s 3,000 sq. ft. cafeteria had sheet vinyl installed over a concrete substrate. The Stonhard team recognized the need to address installation and functionality issues prior to design and aesthetics considerations. The existing floor was removed and necessary prepping, patching, and priming with Stonset PM5 and Stonclad GS was completed to ensure a durable foundation for supporting the foot traffic the facility was sure to see on a daily basis for years to come.
Stonhard provided a custom design for the university cafeteria. The colorful surface with rich chip design provides a unique look.
Custom decal applied over mortar.
Next, Stonhard discussed the flooring system to provide the best features for the facility. After learning the client desired a floor with a unique look, comfort underfoot, good acoustics, and low-maintenance, Stonres RTZ was selected as the best option to achieve all requirements. The urethane flooring was poured in a custom-strip pattern in three standard colors, Santa Fe, Mystic, and Moss, giving the cafeteria a unique and welcoming appearance. To achieve a decorative finish, the floors were sanded mechanically. Finally, Stonres Flex Groutcoat was applied to provide optimum wear protection and the flooring system was finished with two coats of Stonseal CF7 for long-term performance.
John A. Burns School of Medicine now takes pride in its attractive cafeteria that hosts students and visitors from all over the world. Not only is the facility inviting and attractive, but its floors are also easy to clean and durable and will reflect the university’s excellence for many years to come.
