UK Metro Stations Revitalized with Durable, Sound-Absorbing Stonres RTZ Floors

Aging, Noisy, Slippery Floors Challenge Tyne and Wear Metro’s Modernization Efforts

Tyne and Wear Metro, a light rail system in Northeast England with 60 stations and over 40 million annual riders, embarked on a $500 million, nine-year modernization to upgrade stations, infrastructure, and technology due to daily wear and tear on the system’s facilities.

In the first phase of the plan, project managers for the Haymarket and Sunderland Metro Stations faced a dilemma: either replace the existing noisy, slippery and damaged terrazzo tiles at great cost; or install a new floor overtop, limiting product selection.

Stonres RTZ replaced worn terrazzo, delivering a sleek, sound-reducing, and slip-resistant surface for Metro passengers.

Despite winter challenges, Stonhard crews expertly installed 7,500 sq. ft. of durable, high-performance flooring to modernize Haymarket and Sunderland stations.

Stonhard Delivers for Railway Pushing Through Winter Challenges and Meeting Tight Timelines

Stonhard presented Stonres RTZ, a seamless, urethane-based, ergonomic, sound-reducing, long-wearing, and stain-resistant floor system. Planners were especially impressed with the floor’s ability to easily be installed over the terrazzo. Despite winter cold, lack of on-site storage, and tight time constraints around public timetables, Stonhard crews successfully installed 7,500 sq. ft. of flooring. Temporary tents were used to prepare resin materials at the proper temperature, transported via nightly rail deliveries, with the railway sector monitoring for health and safety compliance.
